Kenya’s livelihood security through irrigated Agriculture

By Caroline SANG

Achieving sustainable development lies in embracing simple solutions that will go a long way to improve livelihoods of the poor. In Kenya for instance the past decades have seen a decline in forest cover, rivers have dried up and some have been reduced to streams. This has exposed the population to drought and famine as experienced in 2011 where Mandera County was the area hardest hit by the East Africa Drought Crisis. Hundreds of thousands of livestock died, and tens of thousands of children were brought to the brink of starvation by severe malnutrition.
